THE VANCOUVER INSTITUTE OF PSYCHOANALYSIS

The VIP was formed in 2003 as a Branch of the Canadian Institute of Psychoanalysis (CIP) under whose By-Laws we function and to whom we are accountable. We offer psychoanalytic training based on the tripartite model, consisting of a personal analysis of a minimum of four sessions per week, lectures and seminars and the analyses of control cases under the supervision of training analysts. The course is of four years duration, is diverse and includes all the major theoretical psychoanalytic approaches. Our first intake was in 2003 and the first year of training commenced in January, 2004.

Applicants for training are usually psychiatrists, psychologists, social workers and other members of the mental health profession. Since the experience and skills of our candidates is not homogeneous at the outset, the acquisition of a psychoanalytic identity is a gradual and variable process leading ultimately to graduation at an unspecified date. The training is unique in proceeding at different rates of learning and progression for each candidate. From the second year of training a mentor or counsellor is offered for each candidate to assist them with difficulties they may encounter during training. Our training is under the auspices of the Canadian Institute of Psychoanalysis.

The date for the commencement of our next training course has not yet been determined. Individuals interested in psychoanalytic training are advised to enter analysis as 6-12 months of analysis with a training analyst is a prerequisite for application. They may also stay in touch with the Secretary of the VIP who would best be able to advise them of the time of commencement of the next course, prerequisites and of how they may apply for assessment for training when the course is offered.
